Searching for the perfect logo again! It seems this has been on the agenda forever.
Logo Guidelines
Notes from 2003, courtesy Julien G.
- MUST be submitted in a common vector format (Illustrator v7 (pref, - v8/9 acceptable), EPS, SVG acceptable, NO BITMAPS) - Clean all unused objects. If we're going to have a logo we need it in a vector format, because it's REALLY hard to change the size and/or resolution of a JPG/GIF etc.
- MUST have versions (or a single one that works) for both light and dark backgrounds. Fairly obvious, usually just means that it might need an extra outline for dark backgrounds.
- MUST have a version (Light background only acceptable) that uses a maximum of two spot (pantone) colours for printing (spot gradients acceptable), in addition versions for grayscale and B/W are recommended. Printing is EXPENSIVE, two spot colours cheapens it a lot, (eg the current logo uses two colours, black and a shade of cyan).
- MUST be legible (or have a version that is) at less then 1" height eg, Letterheads and web sites.
- SHOULD convey CBV ideals, or at least be obviously IT related.
- SHOULD work on a business card, or be easily adaptable.
What FOSS applications can I use to do a logo?
Sodipodi, which natively works in SVG (As with all vector apps it's hard to get used to but there are some good tutorials on the net). Sodipodi is in debian and there is a new C++ version coming out soon. Inkscape. Openoffice Draw.
Kylie's comments 2005
These are some of the things I feel would make a good logo:
- Computerbank is one word only, no capital B, our full name is Computerbank Victoria Incorporated.
- Up to two colors, prefer black/white as main color (we don't have funds for printing in color, and we always print letterhead template on b/w laser)
- Don't use a different font or color for the word Computerbank (ie like our logo now, that only encourages people to think it is two words.
- Easy to stencil/screen print
- Clever use of picture if included (prefer none)
- Think simple
Current Logo
Current logo here: http://vic.computerbank.org.au/Members/kylie/cblogo/ Some folks think it is too pretty. We generally use the word Computerbank on our website minus the logo.
We didn't develop the logo in the first place (done by QLD folks) and we don't have the original SVG of it, all we have is a (gah) JPG of it.
Ideas and Comments
Are we happy to have a logo that justs says Computerbank??? Thoughts?

Alex's comments:
"The attached is some examples of logo’s for computerbank. They have been done in inkscape. The font in the logo you had was Boca Raton ICG Solid ( to the best of my knowledge), and the closest I have been able to find to it is Casablanca Heavy SF Bold.
Basic thoughts behind the design were that you needed the logo to tell people what you do, which the previous did not, hence the decision to incorporate something similar to the recycling design in it. It is somewhat similar to the green pc logo, but you may as well get inspiration from something good, and theirs is a good logo. The colours in this are not quite right, but let me know what you all think, and let me know of any suggestions to change it.
My only area that I am not quite happy with is that it may not quite tell people exactly what you do, but the combination of an identiftable recycling logo with the name computerbank should make it obvious enough, and I am not quite sure how you would fix that.
And a quick comment on the penguin, or lack of; the penguin does not say what you do, only how you do a part of it."
