Darebin Linux Thin Clients

Still running steady, Linux thin client networks provide free public access to the internet at two Office of Housing sites in the City of Darebin.

Computerbank started working with the City of Darebin Aged and Disability Services more than two years ago. Public access networks have been set up at two sites. Both sites use Linux thin client technology with a scaled back version of the Computerbank Debian distribution.

Thin client technology is a great way to extend the life of older computers, one high powered computer (server) can become the hands and eyes of low end computers (clients). The low end computers behave as fast as the server.

One of the networks services elderly residents in Thornbury and has been running without problems for two years. A similar network operates at the high rise flats in Northcote and has been running for 18 months. Residents use the computers for keeping in contact with relatives and friends by email, internet research and reading newspapers in other languages as well as for writing letters, recipes and stories, viewing PDF's and printing. Games are also popular.

The sites are managed by residents. Computerbank rarely needs to provide onsite support for the networks. The networks are monitored remotely by a Computerbank volunteer. Custom scripts have been used to facilitate a point and click approach to System Administration.
